Welcome Mayhem Maker

Welcome to this week's edition of Mayhem Insider (episode 2)

Father's Day Weekend

It's been an eventful few days for the Mayhem team.

But first, I want to wish a happy belated Father's Day to you and yours.

I posted the pic above after a 3-mile run on Sunday morning and shared a few other family pics I got from the community.

This one's my favorite from @jiujitsu.jack

Shoutout to @mayhemonthemat for making Jiu Jitsu more than just a sport. It’s about facing our struggles head-on and knowing we’re not alone. Together we roll, fall, and rise – stronger and unbreakable.

By the way, if you're following the Mayhem account on Instagram, it's actually me that sends out every DM and responds to every message. So I want to say thank you for your attention and for all the kind messages I get on a daily basis.

ADCC

We had a few teammates at ADCC Dallas and I want to shout out Ivan Sanabria (@smash_n_dash_bjj) for getting silver in his divison and Jacob Solley (@jacob_solley_grappler) for taking double gold for the kids.

Both athletes put long hours into their craft and their results show for it.

Can't be more happy for everyone who competes, win or lose, because it's both a thrill and major learning experience.

Also, Ivan's video here gives me the chills...

Belt Promotions

Promotions are starting to go down in the Jiu Jitsu community so congrats if you've leveled up recently.

Our sport is incredibly complex so it's nice to be recognized for our progress.

If you didn't get promoted this time around, here's my perspective on goals vs process (hope it's helpful if you're feeling down):

The goal shouldn't be to get the next belt color, win the next comp, etc...

The goal should be overcoming our excuses and doing the daily tasks we know we need to be doing.

For example: Make the goal to train every day and the other stuff will take care of themselves.

Eat clean and exercise daily → Live in a strong body

Spend time with your family daily → Have strong relationships

Hit the mats daily → Belt up and Win competitions

Fall in love with the PROCESS, not the OUTCOME.

When we apply this mindset, we hit daily achievements instead of waiting weeks/months for it.

So focus on process and results take care of themselves.

(Side note: Surprise promotions like this one from @austin_byrne_mma are some of my favorite videos.)

Discord

I'm curious who else is familiar with it.

I mentioned last week that I wanted to build a forum and Discord was an option that came up.

Curious to know (a) if you use it, (b) HOW you're using it if you are, (c) and if there's a way to store/share videos?

Skool is also a platform that's getting mentioned.

Mayhem Spotlight

Sean Tilson (@coachseanbjj) runs the youth BJJ and competition BJJ programs at his gym, Hard Drive Performance Center.

But 6 years ago he was fighting depression, substance abuse, and the loss of a dear friend to suicide.

He's a mentor for many and it's amazing to see what he's doing with up and coming athletes in his community.

Jiu Jitsu's given him a strong purpose today and I'm thrilled to have him represent for the Mayhem Team.

JUST FOR FUN

There's a new white belt in my gym who loves to get submitted.

Well, I don't know if he LOVES it, but after he taps, instead of asking for tips on what he did wrong or how to do the submission... He screams "AGAIN!" and proceeds to go into Tasmanian devil mode.

I like to help my teammates but because this guy elbowed me in my mouth and slammed me to the mat when trying to get out of my closed guard...

I went to town and collected submissions.

Pretty satisfying.

That's all for now, my fellow Mayhem Maker.

Smash your week ahead, Jay
