Welcome Mayhem Maker
I'm Jay and I'm the Founder of Mayhem On The Mat.
Thank you so much for supporting my small business.
Mayhem On The Mat was born out of my struggles with depression. When I was in an emotionally abusive relationship, when I got laid off from my job, and when life's overwhelming pressures had me feeling hopeless, Jiu Jitsu was the only thing I looked forward to. And for that I'm incredibly grateful to the sport for getting me through the darkness...
Why I'm In Your Inbox
I've been wanting to share more with you and reveal a behind-the-scenes look...
So to connect with you on a more meaningful level, I'll be sending newsletters like this at least once per week so we can better know each other.
So here's the first of the Mayhem weekly digest...
New On Instagram
Seems a lot of people liked the June Blessings reel I posted last week (this one) as it's now the highest viewed reel on the Instagram page.
The one I posted today isn't nearly as long (~10 seconds) but it's a reminder that all the work you're putting into your craft will most definitely be worth it (as long as you don't give up).
Community Launch
I was talking with @askingalexander_ about adding a forum for Mayhem On The Mat.
Truth is it's something I planned to do from the beginning but I still have a lot of research to do for it. I need to learn more about the tech stuff for actually hosting it and I also want to know what Jiu Jitsu athletes are interested in talking about.
I know one thing for sure, I don't want Mayhem to be another forum where people are shitting on each other for their opinions or lack of knowledge (look at the Jiu Jitsu forums on Reddit, for example).
I also want to keep jokes to a minimum, there's enough of that on IG as it is.
If you have any ideas on this, reply to this email and share your thoughts. I'd love to read them.
NEW for June
I revealed new designs at the beginning of the month. I did this on Instagram so a lot of people probably missed it. Check them out below if you're interested to see.
This is the first new design launch I've had since March and my intention is to launch at least 4 per month in various colorways.
So for this first month of trying, I hit my target.
It only took a week of staying up until 2am to do it, but it got done and I'm happy with the initial feedback.
There are multiple colorways for each design, so click around the site and hopefully you find something you like.
June is Men's Mental Health Month
According to MensHealthForum:
Four in five suicides are by men – suicide is the biggest cause of death for men under 35 and there has been a sharp increase in the rate among men aged 35-64.
This is shocking because I thought the number one cause would be reckless activities (like drunk driving).
Men, we have to take care of each other. We strive to be protectors and sometimes forget that the men in our life also need protecting, we all do at times. So check in on the men you value in your life. You'd be surprised how much you can learn from them when given the chance to vent.
Signing Off
Hope you enjoyed this first edition.
I know it's light and there's a lot for us to talk about (Craig Jones vs ADCC is something I've been paying attention to a lot lately)... And I also know this email is mostly a word vomit of my current thoughts...
But let me know what you enjoyed the most and I'll keep doing more of the same. Let's open up a dialogue...
Until then, SMASH YOUR WEEK AHEAD.
LFG,
Jay, Founder of Mayhem On The Mat
